Travel Fellowship Application

             I want our travel experience to demonstrate different techniques in our chosen career and provide future inspiration. By traveling, we will be advancing style by adding cultural context and taking it in. Personally, I have never been out of the states. I feel like seeing another pace of art, besides American, will give us worldly knowledge. When we have art careers like this, it helps to get outside perspectives that take it serious like us. In Brussels Europe there is a non-profit organization called CARTOON, which holds forums and exciting presentations of animated films. At Cartoon, one has the ability to pitch ideas and submit projects.
             I also believe that this opportunity will open us connect to other outlets of animation. This organization could reveal business instruments and hints to success. The Brussels is the capital of the European Union; I hope the city will give us historical reference. The trip would also be open to the Digital Cinema kids, for documentation or experimentation. Theaters like the Cirque Royal, shows many classical forms of cinema. The traditions and culture are a whole other element to this experience. I hope to find that students learn from their environment as well as the business factors.
             It is expensive to provide anything across country. The cheapest airplane tickets I found ranges from 2 grand to 3 grand. I believe each student should only need a thousand for their time there. I want students to have options when choosing food. When traveling I want the freedom of enjoying time spent as well as exploring. Two third of the money goes to airline fees while the other third will be split between instruments, events, and food. The overall price should be around three thousand five hundred per student.
             After the trip, I hope to display the influenced work at the school like when they do the Horne Lake trip.  Unlike the Horne Lake trip, students will have a technological advantage and will form connections for future purposes. I believe this could be a stepping-stone for MCA students, especially those working with a digital media.

October 26th

Summary of Prep

             The objective of the main character is based on sex. He masturbates in order to deal with his frustration of not obtaining it. His emotions are bland before he stands up for himself and earns a swagger. The first scene portrays Jack taking action and notes about his fascination with sex. The second scene shows the relationship between mother and son by a conflict, finding his porn notes.  His mother gives insightful information and unknowingly gives Jack his journey. Scene three is when all hope if lost for Jack as he feels shame.  The impacts of Jack’s ashamed feeling are supposed to clarify as the students mock him. Scene four carries on the emotion of being ashamed and it is not until the fifth scene when the main character goes through the biggest changing point. In scene five, Jack is given confidence because he stood up for himself, believing there was no wrong for his actions. The last scene carries the same emotion as the last and is similar to the second except now Jack is proud. This is visually supposed to tie the character feeling relieved with the audiences’ relation when the film ends.

Rehearsal Notes:
             The only problem I ran into with rehearsal was my antagonist not showing up. I have been training my actors to fit the character’s they are going to portray. When working with Jess Graber, it was a difficult process to get her to lose her usual expression and reaction. I believe that my Jack, Cliff Stall smith was a good pick because he is able to portray the bland emotion I wanted for the beginning. My search for the principal became an issue, but I found a good candidate. The principal didn’t fit all my standards so I changed the characters back-story to better fit my actor. It was difficult for me to get each actor to capture the impact of his or her emotions. I had to alter the normal reaction in order to follow each character description. Scott Cooper, the principal, took the role seriously and was able to exaggerate the conversation had with Jack.  My sister, Desi Winfrey, needs more work with the script, so  I gave her one to practice. I had to place her in the shoes of a mom who finds his sons’ porn notes by asking, “what would our mom do?”

Pre-production

Over the fall break I searched for talent and setting that would fit the characteristics and details to my project. While brainstorming I came up with options to each character and place. I have two settings and five characters.

The first place in the script was the school.To make it realistic I wanted to use a real school.
1.Memphis College of Art- It is the most feasible. I would use the offices on the first floor as the principals office. The bathroom would be perfect because of the stalls. There is only a couple of rooms that could pull off the classroom feel.
2. Overton High School- I would not have to decorate the school to look like a high school because it is one. The only questioning factor for my scenes is the library scene when it comes to this place.

The second place in my script is the house that Jack and his mom stay at.
1.My sisters house: This house is already artsy and has the tacky feeling I want.  I just moved out so there is an empty room that I can pretend is Jacks. There is hardwood flooring and interesting, old details.

Fellowship/Intern (Revised)

Internships:
1.Cosmic Toast Studios interests me because it is located in California and it it airs in one-hundred and seventy five countries. The network focuses in on making memorable characters which I think is an important element while working in my chosen career. The company also supports the addition of learning in their production. In Slangman's  World, a live action animated sequence, teaches people about other cultures and languages.

2.Mondo Mini Shows is a animation channel via internet that produces shorts and advertisements. I believe that an internship to this place will help me learn about producing my animation to a mass audience. Cult cartoon, Happy Friends, was created at this company. This new-age form of cartooning works on keeping the attention of the audience, which I need to learn. Happy Friends started on Mondo Mini Shows and is now a television series. It is located in San Francisco, which is an ideal vacation area while I'm exploring.

3. New York is a city that captivates much of the media.  Ace and Son is a new company that works with animation and commercial design. This company, before renovated, used to be called Asterik Animation which pilots Comedy Central. The media used at Ace and Son is limitless, containing even stop-motion and hand-drawn animations. I believe this place would be a perfect spot to get an idea of the animation shown in America.

Fellowship:
When researching for traveling fellowships I found a major company in Europe that has a connections with my goals. I first tried to look for fellowships for graffiti arts because I know it's a big deal in Europe. While brainstorming I narrowed down to focus in on fellowships that relate to my actual career. In Belgium, there is a company called Cartoon Connection. A non-profit organization funded bye MEDIA international.  This company provides informative speakers presentations where the Economics and a co-production case studies is explained. Cartoon Connections share mutual knowledge with Latin-America and Canada. Personally I chose Belgium to look at where some of the Gothic and Romanesque paintings started and I would like to learn about Folklore culture. I believe I qualify to expand my knowledge of Animation because it is my chosen career. To me, it's intriguing to see how other countries approach Animation and the style of it.

IS ALL HIGHSCHOOL IS ABOUT SO HE TAKES PROPER PREPERATION. HE NEVER KNEW HIS FATHER AND HE HAS A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS MOM.

MOM(JANICE ARMSTRONG): A CARING MOTHER THAT WORKS EVERYDAY AT A RESTRAUNT IN ORDER TO PUT THE ROOF OVER THEIR HEAD. SHE HAS QUALITIES OF A “COOL” MOM.SHE SMOKES WEED. SHE GIVES REALLY INCITEFUL INFORMATION THAT HELPS JACK. SHE IS DOWN TO EARTH



RAE:SITS IN JACKS GEOGRAPHY CLASS WITH HIM AND IT IS UNKNOWN THAT SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF THE PRINCIPAL. SHE IS INBETWEEN A PUNK KID WHO LISTENS TO

SCENE 2:CAUGHT
THE LIVING ROOM HAS HARDWOOD FLOOR, A COUCH, BEAN BAGS, AND A TV. ONE HAS TO WALK THROUGH THE LIVING ROOM TO SIT IN THE DINING ROOM. THE HOUSE IS CORKY; A PICNIC TABLE CLOTH OVER THE TABLE, BOXES OF UNPACKED THINGS, AND GRATEFUL DEAD POSTERS.

Jack comes home from school and throws his book bag on couch sloppily. His mother had prepared a meal for him sits down. As he is chowing down, his mother is in the background cleaning. She comes across the mess he made the couch and the folder flops open, revealing his porn notes.


Mom: "Jack...what’s this?" (MORE)

Jack: (is silent with a full mouth)

Mom: "I know these aren’t school notes"

Jack:(clears throat) " I was trying to learn about sex"

Mom: (laughingly) " Are you trying to prepare?"

Jack:(nods)

Mom: "Son, people don’t learn how to have sex by jerking off to other people doing it.Wow, there’s a lot of notes here."
Jack: "Mom,what do you expect me to do?"

SCENE 3: CAUGHT AGAIN?
SHOT: TO DESCRIBE THE SCHOOL JACK ATTENDS. IT IS A MIDDLE CLASS PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL AND EVERYONE IS SEPARATED IN IN THEIR STEREOTYPES. JACK BELONGS TO THE NERD POPULATION. IT IS TOLD THROUGH WHO HE COMMUNICATES WITH AND A JOCK WHO HARRASES HIM IN THE HALL. WHILE WE SPEED THROUGH THE GROUPS OF PEOPLE (NERDS,JOCKS,CHEERLEADERS,PREPS,GANGSTER, AND GOTH/EMO) WE FOLLOW JACK INTO THE LIBRARY WHERE HE SITS BY HIMSELF WITH A SEX HEALTH BOOK.

Jack flips through the pages when he stops on a picture that shows the arc in a womans back. He stairs and it is noticible to the audience that he is becoming erect. He can’t make it stop so he runs to the bathroom with the book. Jack looks around the bathroom halls for privacy but he looks conspicious. Runs in a stall.

SHOT:WHILE JACK IS RUNS IN TO THE RESTROOM THE CAMERA STOPS ON THE WOMAN SIGN OUTSIDE THE ROOM HE RAN INTO. GIVING THE AUDIENCE INFORMATION THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER IS NOT AWARE OF.


Jack hears someone walks in so he tries to hurry and finish. Right as he is about to orgasm he hears Rae. He freezes up.

Rae:" Hello, is anyone in here?"

As she knocks on the door, it creaks open and Jack has an orgasm
Rae: (Screams high pitch)"EW you fucking pervert"

She runs out of the bathroom. Jack walks out with his head down and the principal is introduced while he snatches Jacks arm and says nothing as he drags Jack to the office.

THE SMALL PRINICIPALS OFFICE IS SHOWN, GREEN WALLS, A DESK WITH TWO CHAIRS INFRONT OF IT, AND A FAMILY PORTRAIT.

Jack notices that Rae was in his family portrait. She was the principals daughters. Jacks face blushes and his head hangs even lower. The principal looks furious.

Principal:"Todays incident was completely inappropriate"
"I had a brief conversation with your mother and she isn’t suprised. I’m highly offended and suprised about your behavior"

Jack: (sits and nods)

Principal: " I’m not going to punish you because I believe this embarrasing, shameful occurance was enough. Don’t you agree?"

Jack:(nods)

Principal: "Now get out of here" Jack Returns to class.

SCENE 4: STANDING UP
Jack sits down in his desk. He could feel the vibe that the classroom was aware of his crime. The teacher is teaching then gets a phone call, leaving the room. Jack over hears these boys making fun of him.

boy#1: "hey look, it’s sir. jacks off a lot."

boy#2: (laughs histarically)

Jack is fed up with it. He stands up and rushes to the boy who made the comment. The boy looks uncomfortable and a little scared.

Jack:" Listen here prick, mind your own business because I do not even feel shame about my situation. I’m proud to say that my masturbation is practice for the real thing. When your girlfriend is not satisfied with you, she’ll come to me for an orgasm."

boy#1: (quietly) " Listen man, my girlfriend gets off sometimes. You don’t have to get in my personals just because the whole school shames what happened."

Jack returns from school one day and follows the same routine. Throwing his backpack sloppily on the couch and sitting at the table to eat. His mom is cleaning again and finds a second set of notes.

Mom:"Jack, what are these?"

Jack:(smiling) "I finally learned about sex"

Revision Revised.

I've shortened, extended, and condensed.This is what I've got:


The premise of this story is that addiction is a personal attempt to seek self-satisfaction and fulfillment.

 The scene opens up with an average middle-aged man taking notes as he masturbates to pornography on the Internet. He is taking notice to the positions and aspects that make up his fascination. It was not about the sex at this point, it was more about the fantasy. He ignores his pleasure as an addiction and becomes obsessive about his notes.He has been married for ten years but their sex life became dull.

 The inciting incident includes the finding of his notes by his wife. He was able to hide this private life until he is shamefully hiding behind his wife's back because she was furious.  Despite his wife, the main character continues to seek self-fulfilling pleasure. The main character starts to become careless and then seeks new ways to experiment with his fascination. While trying to free himself, he tries to find other like him. He finds a database of people who seek out different ways of sexual pleasure induced by ones’ self.

The climax involves this man trying to make this blog his masterpiece of his personal pleasure experiences to share to others. He then tries different methods. While reviewing an article about auto-asphyxiation and he wants to try it and take notes. This man dies in the middle of his orgasm realizing how pathetic his search for happiness was.
